Transformative Therapy

Therapy can often feel a bit confusing to clients if not explain properly beforehand. You might come to therapy because of stress at work for example, and there you are talking about your childhood. In the case of work stress, the truth, is that how you relate to and respond to stress is firmly grounded in your formative experiences of it during infancy and childhood. This is the case with most issues you bring to Therapy the issue itself will not necessarily relate directly to your childhood, but how are you engaged with emotionally and relationally will.

Neuroscience the study of the brain and the nervous system validates this concept. It also states that the brain has the capacity to restructure itself and form new connections and pathways, which underpin the importance and value of the Psychotherapy not only in exploring important, historical events and relationships, but also in potentially re-organizing the brain to encourage the creation and strengthening of healthier neural connections and pathways in the future.

I often hear my clients say, the one thing that helped them most in the therapeutic process was the therapeutic space itself. This permission, in a sense, to feel, explore, and reflect, without judgment, or haste, can create a crucial shift in how they experience themselves and thus facilitate real, deep change.

From the earliest moments of our lives, we are searching for and are in need of relationship and connection – it is in our early life where we begin to understand who we are, who others are, and what kind of world we live in. It is this quest for connections outside of us that shades of Meaning, Purpose, and Creativity emerge within us. The quality of these aspects of life produces in us both wounds and liberties. Fortunately, therapy can be a place for us to gently and intentionally tease these qualities out toward a life and sense of self in-line with your goals.

Operating from a psychoanalytic approach, both conscious and unconscious information will be explored in our space; past events, experiences, and the spaces in-between our memories inform how we show up in the world – they deserve our attention. Central to navigating our time together will include cultivating a judgment-free space of exploration at your own pace where you feel able to speak openly and freely.

I believe that people are in a constant state of Becoming – who we are, how we understand ourselves, others, and the world around us is changing all the time. Ultimately, I am not the arbiter of your life, you are. Intentional and sometimes difficult self-reflection can bring about amazing shifts in our approach to life. Oftentimes, when working with individuals in my specialties, meeting more than once a week proves to be effective. We will begin with weekly sessions and discuss whether an increase in frequency would be effective for our work together.
